Hugging is good for your health! Oxytocin… Our “Feel Good” hormone.

Hugging

HUGGING

Studies have shown that hugging increases the level of the hormone Oxytocin in our blood. Oxytocin is known as the “bonding hormone”. Oxytocin causes a “bonding” or “caring” response in people when it is released. Positive physical touch through hugging has an immediate anti-stress effect. Think of all the benefits that could come from sharing hugs every day! Hugging slows breathing and heart rate. A daily dose of Oxytocin from hugging can help prevent heart disease, because as the levels of Oxytocin in our blood increase, our blood pressure drops, reducing the risk of heart disease.

Hugging eases tension, improves overall mood, increases nerve activity and releases fear. Research has also demonstrated that Oxytocin can decrease anxiety and protect against stress. Hugging can help relieve pain and depression. Oxytocin modulates inflammation by decreasing certain cytokines. Thus, the increased release of Oxytocin following positive social interactions [such as when hugging] has the potential to improve wound healing.

We all can benefit from hugs, no matter what our age. Several sources suggest that everyone needs at least four hugs a day for healthy survival. Eight hugs a day provide emotional strength. Twelve hugs a day provide growth and empowerment.

Hugs feel good, yet one thing to remember is that in order to benefit from hugs, they need to be open and sincere. Some people don’t like to be touched, so before you offer a hug to someone, first ask them if it would be OK.

When done properly, hugs are simply the most beautiful things people can share.
